Compression Therapy

compression therapy for varicose veins

What is Compression Therapy?

Compression therapy is a noninvasive treatment that uses specially designed stockings, sleeves, or wraps to gently apply pressure to your legs. This improves circulation, reduces swelling, and helps your veins move blood more efficiently back to your heart.

It’s commonly used for patients with:

  • Chronic venous insufficiency

  • Leg swelling (edema)

  • Varicose veins

  • Venous ulcers or skin changes caused by poor circulation

  • Lymphedema or post-surgical swelling

How Compression Therapy Helps

By promoting better blood flow, compression therapy can:

  • Relieve pain, heaviness, and fatigue in your legs
  • Prevent blood from pooling in your veins
  • Reduce the risk of blood clots and skin complications
  • Support healing of venous ulcers

What To Expect

Your cardiologist or vascular specialist will assess your circulation and determine the right level of compression for your condition. You may be prescribed:

  • Compression stockings: Daily wear garments for ongoing circulation support
  • Intermittent pneumatic compression devices: Inflatable sleeves that gently squeeze your legs in rhythmic cycles
  • Bandages or wraps: Often used for wound care or short-term swelling control

Your provider will show you how to use your compression therapy safely and effectively as part of your overall vein or heart health plan.

Part of a Comprehensive Care Plan

Compression therapy often works best when combined with:

  • Regular movement or exercise
  • Elevating your legs when possible
  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Treating underlying vein or heart conditions

At Cardiac Associates of North Jersey, we tailor each treatment plan to address the root cause of your symptoms, not just the discomfort.
