What is an Implantable Loop Recorder?

An implantable loop recorder (ILR) is a tiny device inserted under the skin of the chest to continuously monitor heart rhythms for up to 3–6 years, helping diagnose infrequent symptoms like unexplained fainting, palpitations, or rapid/slow heartbeats. It records abnormal events automatically or when triggered by the patient, providing long-term data for arrhythmia management.

Common Reasons for Use

  • Evaluating unexplained fainting (syncope)
  • Monitoring for atrial fibrillation (AFib)
  • Diagnosing palpitations or dizziness
  • Determining causes of unexplained strokes
The device is removed when a diagnosis is reached or the battery runs down, which requires another simple outpatient procedure.

How It Works

The loop recorder measures heart signal using the device housing and the electrode at the tip of the antenna as the sensing vector without cables or attachments to the skin. As a result, you can maintain normal activities in your everyday life.

  • Continuous Monitoring: The device acts like an electrocardiogram (ECG) and records for 2–3 years or more.
  • Automatic Recording: If the heart rate goes outside preset limits, the device stores the data automatically.
  • Patient Activated: A handheld activator can be used to trigger a recording when symptoms occur.
  • Remote Transmission: Data is often transmitted wirelessly and securely to a doctor.

Key Details

  • Procedure: It is a quick, minimally invasive, out-patient procedure using local anesthesia to inject the device under the skin.
  • Duration: The battery generally lasts between 3 and 6 years.
  • Risks: Minor risks include bleeding, bruising, or pain at the incision site.
