Coronary and Peripheral Intervention Options

It’s common knowledge that a healthy life depends a great deal on the state of a person’s arteries. If they’re not performing or functioning correctly, then this can lead to massive health problems and risks. To promote and aid arteries, there are a few intervention problems available that can increase a patient’s health and keep them living the life they want without worry about their state of health. Two options are coronary and peripheral intervention.

Coronary Intervention

Coronary intervention can help unblock arteries. Plaque, which is made up of things like calcium, cholesterol, and fat, builds up in the arteries, and build-up can lead to blockage. When untreated, it can result in heart attack.

A form of coronary intervention is known as coronary stenting. Simply, this treatment involves the insertion of a metal stent that aids in restoring blood flow. This is particularly useful in the cases where there may be blockages in the coronary arteries. The stent can expand within the artery that is blocked. This is mounted on a catheter, which is a thin tube.

Peripheral Intervention

When plaque builds up in the arteries, this can cause the arteries to harden and narrow. When this occurs, poor circulation can happen, especially to the legs and feet. Some of the symptoms a patient might have with a peripheral artery disease are pain, tiredness, burning sensation in their feet, or discomfort. Similar to coronary stent intervention, there is a stent that can be used for peripheral artery disease, too.

During the procedure, a catheter is placed into the blood vessel. The goal of the procedure is to reduce the presence of plaque to help blood flow. Blockage can result in inadequate blood flow, which can cause problems like claudication, which is pain and cramping in legs due to not enough blood flow to muscles.
