Does Sclerotherapy Really Work?

Sclerotherapy Works!

Sclerotherapy is a medical treatment where a substance called a sclerosant is injected directly into damaged veins to relieve symptoms like pain and swelling and for cosmetic reasons. It is often used as an alternative to surgical approaches. The sclerosant is usually comprised of polidocanol, sodium tetradecyl sulfate, or hypertonic saline solution.

This Sclerotherapy treatment works to remove and diminish varicose veins and spider veins. After treatment, you will see a reduction in these veins. Often, they are eliminated completely.

How Fast Does It Work?

Most people see some shrinking and fading of the veins within a few weeks after treatments. Other patients may not notice an improvement for several months. Any pain or discomfort caused by the veins should slowly decrease over this time period as well.

How Is Treatment Given?

The Sclerotherapy treatment is given via an injection directly into the vein or lymph vessel. The solution causes the blood vessels to swell, cutting off the flow of blood. The blood is then redirected to a healthy vein. Once the flow of blood and fluid has stopped, the blood vessels shrink and are no longer bulging and visible under the surface of the skin. Over time, your body absorbers the unused, damaged vein.

An ultrasound may be needed to see veins that are deep under the skin. At your appointment, we will clean the area that will be treated. Then the vessels will be injected using a small needle.

How Many Treatments Are Needed?

The number of treatments depends on where the problem vein is located and the extent of the problem. If you have many affected veins that are deep under the skin, the process will take longer than it would for just a few smaller veins.

Each treatment can last anywhere from about 15 minutes to an hour, depending on the number of injections needed. You may need up to four treatments to see the results you want.

What Are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins appear on the body as twisted and swollen veins. They are usually found n the legs and feet, and they are caused by a weakness in or damage to the walls of the veins or valves that keep blood moving toward the heart. Damage to the veins is usually caused by increased blood pressure. When the valves and veins are damaged, blood can pool. This causes veins to become swollen and distorted, and varicose veins are the condition that results.

Varicose veins can cause a number of problems including pain. They can also cause feet and legs to swell. They can also lead to complications like skin ulcers and dangerous bleeding.

What Are Spider Veins?

Spider veins are small veins on the body that are red, purple, or blue. They are sometimes in the shape of a spider web, but other times they look like a thin line, branches, or threads. They occur because of damage to vein walls or because of bursting blood vessels. They are smaller than varicose veins and not usually painful.

Spider veins may occur in any area of the body. Common areas are the thighs, calves, ankles, feet, face, and anus. Many people see spider veins around the nose area. Spider veins do not require treatment, but many people want them removed for cosmetic reasons.

Preparing for Treatment

The first step in sclerotherapy is to have a consultation with the doctor. We will bring you in and ask you questions about how long you have had problems with our veins and what you would like to see accomplished. We will ask you about any medication you are taking and any health issues you have. We will also ask about any previous treatments.

In the days leading up to the appointment, we will have you avoid certain over-the-counter medications to reduce the possibility of bruising. We may also suggest you wear compression stockings for a few days before the treatment if the injections will be in your legs.
