Laser vein treatment removes the vein from the inside. It is called intravenous laser therapy for varicose veins. The laser energy is focused on the inside of the vein to coagulate the blood and damage the vein wall. The vein closes and is sealed off so it can no longer carry blood. You have many other veins that will carry the blood back to the heart.
A thin tube called a catheter is inserted into the affected vein through a very tiny incision. The laser filament is inserted into the catheter to the end and slowly pulled out. As it moves, the laser light destroys the vein wall.
Our surgeon will put gentle pressure on the treated vein to ensure it is closed. It will be bandaged with a pressure bandage and you will need to wear compression stockings for a few weeks to make sure the vein stays closed. The stockings will also help your muscles and other veins move your blood.
Laser vein removal is very safe and efficient. The success rate is 98 percent. The procedure is minimally-invasive and can be performed in our offices. Most treatments take less than an hour. The timing will depend on how many veins are being treated.
During your first consultation with our vein specialist, the extent of your damaged veins will be evaluated. We will also need to learn about your overall health and medical history. You can ask your questions and learn realistic expectations about the results. You should also mention any medications you take especially blood thinners or aspirin.
In some cases, you may experience symptoms of varicose veins without any vein showing beneath your skin. If you have any of the following symptoms, it’s worth having your legs checked so you can treat them in the early stages. The symptoms to look for are:
• Swelling in your feet and ankles
• Pain and aching in your lower legs and a heavy feeling
• Cramps in your lower legs, especially at night
• Unbearable itching that may cause strong scratching that draws blood
• Darkening of the skin around the ankles
• Sores on your lower legs that take a long time to heal
If you have any of the above symptoms, visit Cardiac Associates of North Jersey in Oakland to learn how laser vein treatment can make you look and feel better. Contact us today to schedule your consultation!
