Venous insufficiency typically occurs when vein valves weaken and fail to close properly. When this happens, blood struggles to make it back up the legs and into the heart. Therefore, it pools in the legs and feet, causing bulging veins, swelling, pain and other more concerning side effects. By treating spider veins and varicose veins with sclerotherapy, you can get rid of the appearance of these veins and also rid yourself of the aches and pains that often accompany them.
Sclerotherapy can be used on problematic veins that are three millimeters wide or larger. The veins must be wide enough for the practitioner to access them with a fine needle. Therefore, while sclerotherapy is an excellent treatment for most varicose veins, it may not work for the smallest spider veins.
Sclerotherapy may be a good choice for you if your veins have progressed beyond the point where compression stockings and lifestyle changes can help. The saline will destroy cells and cause a clot in the vein. On the other hand, the sclerosant foam will fill the vein and harden, causing blood flow to stop. Foam is usually used for larger veins.
Results may not be immediate, but they will be permanent. Following the procedure, you will be sent home with instructions as to how you should care for the injection sites and when you can resume activity. You will be able to move around and perform light activities but will want to avoid strenuous activities for about a week.
There is no need to fear that your circulatory system will be harmed by getting rid of these superficial veins.
